John Daly
John Daly, known as Limerick’s “Fenian Mayor,” served three consecutive terms from 1899 to 1901 after democratic reforms widened local voting rights. A veteran of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, he had participated in the 1867 Fenian Rising and later endured imprisonment for revolutionary activity. Released in 1896, Daly returned to Limerick, opened a bakery on William Street and became a powerful nationalist figure. His home welcomed leading republicans, including Patrick Pearse and Seán Mac Diarmada. Daly’s influence extended through his family: his nephew Ned Daly was executed after the Easter Rising, while his niece Kathleen Clarke became a republican leader.
