Crown, Church and Cattle

The clearest institutional development associated with 1206 was Bishop Simon Rochfort’s transfer of the see of Meath from Clonard to Newtown, beside Trim on the River Boyne. Sources differ slightly in their wording—some describe the move as to Trim, others more precisely to Newtown by Trim—but they agree on its significance. Rochfort founded a house of Augustinian canons there, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, and its church became the diocesan cathedral.
