The Doneraile Butchery Claim
The most important environmental record close to this notional date comes from Derryvree, near Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh. Roadworks exposed a remarkable sequence within a drumlin: organic freshwater silts and fine sands lying between two layers of till, the unsorted debris deposited by moving glacier ice. The arrangement establishes a relative sequence. Ice affected the locality; an interval followed in which freshwater sediment and organic matter accumulated; and glacier ice later returned or advanced over the site.
