Raids And Relics

The Ireland of 1027 is visible chiefly through terse annalistic notices: lists of deaths, hostings, raids, ecclesiastical successions and occasional wonders. These entries do not give a continuous narrative, and they seldom explain motives. Yet, when read together, they show a country in which the authority left by Brian Bórama’s career was still being tested, regional kings defended their own frontiers fiercely, Dublin remained a military and commercial power, and monasteries connected Irish society to a wider Christian world.
