Abbeyfeale, Wednesday – As the harvesting season progresses, a clearer picture of this year’s agricultural results is emerging in West Limerick. In the districts of Abbeyfeale, Athea, Templeglantine, Tournafulla, and Mountcollins, the majority of the hay crop has been successfully harvested and is in excellent condition. However, it is observed that the yield in this region is slightly reduced, approximately by a third, which is consistent with a trend observed throughout the country. Nevertheless, the high quality of this year’s crop is expected to offset any losses, providing a compensating effect.
The potato crop, a crucial staple, is reported to be generally excellent in both quantity and quality. While there have been occasional traces of blight, which has been observed in isolated instances, it has not significantly impacted the overall yield. Farmers are optimistic about this year’s returns, anticipating positive results even under the challenging conditions.
On the other hand, the oats crop appears to be thin and of poor quality, indicating a less promising yield. However, there is hope that the upcoming weeks might bring some improvements.
Turnips and lawns, initially slow to grow and in some cases requiring re-seeding, have significantly benefited from recent rains. The past fortnight’s precipitation has helped these crops thrive and prosper.
Carrots are also progressing well, showing favorable signs of growth. Overall, green crops have seen considerable improvement in the past few weeks, providing a positive outlook for the region’s agricultural output.
As the harvest continues, farmers remain optimistic and continue their efforts to secure a successful yield for the season.
