Ormond’s forfeiture is especially revealing because it combined punishment for Jacobite allegiance with the permanent abolition of Tipperary’s palatine jurisdiction, although Butler estates could later return to his family. This distinction suggests that Hanoverian policy treated inherited property differently from exceptional local power. Set beside restrictions on Catholic clergy, military recruitment, labour disputes and commodity standards, the measure implies that post-rising security shaped both constitutional authority and everyday governance. How far should Ormond’s case be interpreted as punishment for rebellion, and how far as part of a broader programme to centralise government and reshape social and economic life in Ireland?
