The article reveals a striking tension between Ireland’s constitutional dependence and the emergence of economic and civic initiatives within the country. Westminster’s assertion of appellate and legislative supremacy limited formal political autonomy, yet Swift recast consumer choice as collective action, while the proposed bank, hospital project and Water Club suggest commercial, charitable and elite organisational energy. These developments did not benefit all communities equally, particularly under penal restrictions, but they complicate any picture of Ireland as merely passive. To what extent should 1720 be understood as a year in which dependence on Britain encouraged economic patriotism, institution-building and political awareness?
