Photographic Archive

The Photographic Archive preserves visual records of Limerick city, County Limerick and Ireland throughout the twentieth century. These images capture streets, buildings, workplaces, schools, sporting occasions, public ceremonies, family life, political events and everyday moments that written records cannot always fully describe.

Historic photographs allow us to see how people dressed, worked, travelled, gathered and lived. They reveal vanished streetscapes, demolished buildings, changing neighbourhoods, old businesses, industrial sites, rural communities and familiar places before modern redevelopment altered their appearance.

The collection includes photographs connected with politics, war, industry, housing, education, religion, sport, transport, entertainment and social life. Each image is presented with as much reliable information as possible, including dates, locations, names and historical context where these can be established.

Some photographs preserve major public events, while others record ordinary people whose lives might otherwise leave little trace in the historical record. A family standing outside a house, workers gathered at a factory, children in a classroom or spectators attending a match can reveal as much about the past as an official portrait or political ceremony.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the archive by subject, place and period. Where identities or locations remain uncertain, additional information from readers may help restore names, dates and stories to the people and places shown.

Through these photographs, Limerick Archives seeks to preserve the visible memory of a century and make it accessible to present and future generations.
