Limerick Archives is an independent history website dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of Limerick city, County Limerick and Ireland throughout the twentieth century. The archive covers the years from 1900 to 2000, presenting carefully researched historical stories in a clear, engaging and accessible form.
The website explores political change, war, revolution, poverty, housing, education, religion, industry, transport, sport, entertainment, crime, public health and everyday family life. Particular attention is given to the ways national events affected Limerick’s streets, workplaces, farms, schools, churches, neighbourhoods and homes.
Many stories are written in the style of contemporary newspaper reports, allowing readers to encounter historical events with a sense of immediacy while remaining grounded in documented facts. Other articles examine people, places, institutions, photographs and forgotten episodes that deserve renewed attention.
Limerick Archives aims to make local history available to everyone. It seeks to preserve memories, recover overlooked experiences and place ordinary people alongside the better-known political figures and public events of the century.
The archive was founded by Gerard J. Hannan, a Limerick historian, author, journalist and broadcaster whose work is centred on the people, streets and history of his native city and county.
New stories and historical material are added regularly as the collection continues to grow.
