Castlepook Cave, County Cork, contains remains of reindeer, mammoth, giant deer and predators, demonstrating a varied cold-stage fauna. A marked reindeer femur, dated broadly near this period, may record stone-tool carcass processing and Ireland’s earliest human trace. However, it proves neither settlement nor continuity. Later glaciation destroyed or buried evidence, leaving a fragmentary landscape archive for modern researchers.

Doneraile’s Single Reindeer

A Cold Interval, Not a Frozen Void

Ireland at this depth in time belonged to a changing Ice Age world, rather than to the familiar green and wooded island of later millennia. Temperatures fluctuated sharply across the North Atlantic region during MIS 3. The Last Glacial Maximum, when the British–Irish Ice Sheet later reached its greatest extent, lay ahead: its global peak is conventionally placed around 26,500–19,000 years ago. Around 31,428 BCE, therefore, the island’s landscapes were already exposed to severe cold and advancing ice systems, but should not be imagined as uniformly buried beneath ice. The Derryvree evidence demonstrates that at least one Fermanagh locality experienced a non-glacial interval with standing or slow-moving freshwater, vegetation and animal life before later ice sealed the deposits beneath till.

That distinction matters. Glacial histories are regional, and Ireland’s ice margins, uplands, lowlands and surrounding seas did not respond everywhere in the same way. Ice had already repeatedly altered the ground and would later scour, redeposit and conceal many older traces. Lower sea levels changed the shape of the continental shelves and may have altered routes available to animals and people, but the precise geography and accessibility of crossings at this particular moment cannot be reconstructed as a simple map. It is unsafe to claim either an easy land bridge, a wholly isolated island, or a single continuous terrain stretching across north-west Europe on the evidence presently available.

Derryvree’s Buried Wetland

The Derryvree site is the strongest environmental witness for Ireland near this notional date. Roadworks in 1969 cut through a drumlin two kilometres north-east of Maguiresbridge and exposed fine sands and organic silts trapped between two thick tills. Till is sediment deposited directly by glacier ice. Its position below and above the freshwater series gives the sequence unusual value: an earlier advance laid down the lower till; a period without local overriding ice permitted sediment, plants and small animals to accumulate; a later glacier covered the archive. The deposit is not a diary of a year, but it gives a securely ordered glimpse of conditions in one northern Irish basin.

Plant remains, pollen, mosses, insects and other microscopic evidence indicate open tundra vegetation and a periglacial climate. The word ‘tundra’ should not conjure a flat, lifeless white plain. Derryvree appears to have been a wet, uneven mosaic of shallow water, silty margins, sedge-rich ground and low-growing plants, subject to frost and poor drainage. Fossils include bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata), mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) and alpine clubmoss (Selaginella selaginoides), all plants compatible with cold, open environments. Their presence is evidence for local ecological conditions; it is not proof that every part of Ireland had the same vegetation, nor that modern populations of these plants have remained continuously in place since the Pleistocene.

Everyday life in such a setting, if people were present, would have depended on minute environmental knowledge: where animals crossed wet ground, where drinkable water remained accessible, and which routes avoided unstable ice, floodwater or exposed terrain. But this is an inference from the landscape and from Upper Palaeolithic lifeways elsewhere in Europe, not an excavated Irish camp. Derryvree has supplied no house floor, hearth, stone-tool scatter, burial, clothing, ornament or food store that can identify a resident human community. It illuminates the country in which any visitors would have moved, not their social organisation.

The Cave at Castlepook

Far to the south, Castlepook Cave near Doneraile in north Cork preserves a different kind of evidence: animal bone accumulated in a limestone cave system. Its collections, much of them recovered during early twentieth-century excavation and now associated with the National Museum of Ireland, include remains attributable to a striking cold-stage fauna. Reindeer, woolly mammoth, giant deer, brown bear, wolf, Arctic fox, mountain hare, lemmings and spotted hyaena are among the animals recorded from Castlepook or the wider southern Irish cave evidence. Recent redating has shown that some Castlepook specimens are substantially older than earlier determinations suggested, confirming that parts of this fauna belong to MIS 3, before the Last Glacial Maximum.

These bones establish that Ireland was not biologically empty. Reindeer could exploit open ground and seasonal plant resources; hares and lemmings speak to cold-adapted habitats; predators and scavengers indicate food chains sufficiently productive to support them. Mammoth and giant deer are especially evocative, but they should not dominate the picture. A cave bone assemblage is not a census of animals living together on one day. Different species may have died decades, centuries or millennia apart. Caves also concentrate remains through carnivore activity, water movement, collapse, excavation disturbance and later collection practices. At Castlepook, hyaenas may themselves have brought carcass parts into the cave, making it a record of animal traffic and scavenging as much as of the surrounding plain.

A Mark and Its Limits

A reindeer femur from Castlepook has made this period exceptionally important for Irish prehistory. The bone has been reported as dating to about 31,000 BCE and bears a deep linear mark interpreted by zooarchaeologist Ruth Carden as a stone-tool cut or chop made while a fresh carcass was being processed. If that interpretation is confirmed, it is potentially the earliest known indication of human handling of an animal in Ireland, extending the possible human story of the island far beyond the previously secure terminal-Pleistocene evidence. County Cork’s heritage publication presents the object as a Palaeolithic reindeer bone, while recent archaeological work has sought surviving Pleistocene deposits in and around the cave.

Yet the responsible conclusion is deliberately modest. One modified femur is evidence for one possible act of carcass processing, not proof of a settlement, tribe, migration or continuous occupation. The bone’s date is the age of the animal’s death; it does not independently timestamp the making of the mark to a calendar year. No securely associated lithic assemblage, hearth, dwelling, human remains or repeated butchery area has been recovered from Castlepook for this period. Nor can the find show whether people killed the reindeer, found it already dead, processed it outside the cave, or lost the bone before carnivores carried it underground. The 2022 investigation itself noted the cave’s long history of disturbance and the difficulty of demonstrating human occupation there.

What Cannot Be Written

For 31,428 BCE there is no evidence for political communities, leaders, territories, warfare, diplomacy, law, named peoples or language in Ireland. There is equally no Irish evidence for religion, formal learning, artistic tradition, long-distance trade, farming or permanent settlement at this date. It would be misleading to fill these silences with stories borrowed from better-known Upper Palaeolithic societies in France, Iberia or central Europe. Those societies show what humans elsewhere could do; they do not demonstrate that the same institutions, beliefs or artistic practices existed in Ireland.

If the Castlepook mark does record human action, the most that may be said is that a very small, mobile party could have reached an Irish landscape occupied by reindeer and other cold-adapted fauna. Meat, marrow, hide, sinew, bone and antler would all have been valuable resources, and a carcass could sustain a short-lived episode of work. This remains a plausible interpretation rather than a documented social scene. There is no basis for calling such visitors colonists, for identifying a route by which they arrived, or for assuming descendants remained after them. The later advance of ice would in any case have erased or deeply buried many fragile traces.

An Archive Beneath Later Ice

The chief historical development around this notional year was environmental volatility. In Fermanagh, freshwater sediments and tundra plants accumulated during a cold but locally ice-free phase. In Cork, caves intermittently received the remains of a large-animal community, including predators and scavengers. Together they show a varied Pleistocene Ireland: open ground and wet hollows, caves and karst, herbivores and carnivores, local refuges and looming glaciation. They do not provide an annual chronicle. Their power lies precisely in their fragmentary character, preserving rare evidence from landscapes that later ice reshaped almost beyond recognition.

Thus the year label should be read as an invitation to examine Ireland’s deep past with care. Derryvree supplies the clearest local environmental archive; Castlepook supplies the most provocative possible human trace. The former is firm evidence of a cold, open wetland world. The latter is a serious but still bounded archaeological question. Between them lies the most defensible picture of Ireland around 31,428 BCE: not a kingdom or a settled society, but a changing Ice Age landscape in which animal life unquestionably endured and human presence, perhaps briefly, remains under investigation.
