31,658 BCE is a modern chronological label, not a recorded Irish event. Castlepook Cave, County Cork, preserves Ireland’s principal pre-Last Glacial Maximum mammal archive, accumulated through carnivore activity, natural deaths, water movement and early excavation. Its bones, dated broadly from over 45,000 to about 20,000 BP, document intermittent cold-stage fauna including reindeer, mammoth, hyaena and wolves. A reindeer femur, assigned approximately 31,000 BC, bears a possible stone-tool butchery mark, potentially Ireland’s earliest evidence of human handling. It does not prove settlement or continuous occupation. Ireland then supported open, variable habitats before later ice-sheet expansion obscured much earlier evidence from view.

Castlepook’s Cut Reindeer

A Cave Archive, Not a Settlement

Castlepook is Ireland’s most important known archive of mammal life before the Last Glacial Maximum. Excavations conducted between 1904 and 1908, under the auspices of the Royal Irish Academy’s cave-exploration work, recovered a very large bone assemblage from its limestone passages and chambers. Its evocative early excavators’ names, including Hyena Hall and Elephant Hall, reflect discoveries of animals that seem startling in a modern Irish setting. The surviving material is now principally associated with the National Museum of Ireland’s Natural History collections.

The cave was not a neatly sealed prehistoric campsite. Bones entered it through more than one process and at more than one time. Carnivores could drag in prey or scavenged carcass parts; animals could die in or near fissures; water could rework sediments; and early twentieth-century excavation inevitably removed much contextual detail now expected from field archaeology. The cave’s evidence is consequently powerful for showing that certain animals occurred in Ireland, but weaker for reconstructing exactly how they arrived, interacted, or were deposited.

The dated sequence demonstrates that Castlepook has considerable time depth. The Irish Quaternary Fauna Project obtained conventional radiocarbon ages from specimens ranging from more than 45,000 BP to roughly 20,000 BP, including reindeer, brown bear, giant deer, mammoth, wolf, Arctic fox, lemmings and spotted hyaena. Geological Survey Ireland summarises a still broader set of individual bone dates, about 45,700 to 19,950 BP. These are not a census of animals living together. They record intermittent survival and accumulation across a changing Ice Age landscape.

The Mark on the Femur

A single reindeer femur makes Castlepook especially relevant to this period. Re-examination of the bone identified a deep mark interpreted as having been made by a sharp stone tool during butchery. County Cork’s heritage publication presents the object as a Palaeolithic reindeer bone of about 31,000 BC and attributes the assessment to the palaeozoologist Ruth Carden. If that identification remains secure, it is potentially the earliest currently claimed evidence that people handled an animal in Ireland: a remarkable extension backwards from the long-established record of post-glacial human presence.

Its significance should not be overstated. A cut-marked bone is evidence of an action on an animal, not automatically evidence of a settlement. The date measures the age of the animal bone, not the precise instant at which a mark was made. The cave has yielded no securely associated hearth, stone-tool assemblage, dwelling floor, human burial, food store or concentration of butchered remains that can demonstrate a camp at this age. Nor does one bone establish continuous occupation, a population size, language, ancestry, named people or a route by which any visitor reached the island.

The most careful conclusion is narrower and more interesting: people may have reached Ireland during an earlier, habitable phase of the last Ice Age and processed at least one reindeer carcass. The animal may have been killed elsewhere and its remains later carried into the cave by hyaenas or wolves, as the County Cork account itself allows. Whether the person or group was briefly passing through, hunting locally, scavenging a carcass, or part of a wider pattern of visits remains unknown. Finding diagnostic stone tools in securely dated deposits would transform the discussion.

Open Country Before the Ice Maximum

At this time Ireland was not yet the wholly ice-covered island of the Last Glacial Maximum. Reconstructions place the full Irish and British-Irish ice-sheet maximum later, broadly around 27,000–23,000 calibrated years BP, although ice expansion and maximum extent differed between regions. Around the notional year considered here, the island stood on the approach to that maximum: a cold, variable northern landscape rather than a timeless white desert. Sea level was much lower globally, exposing extensive continental-shelf landscapes, while ice and changing coastlines altered the practical connections between Ireland, Britain and mainland Europe.

It would be unsafe to draw a detailed map of the Doneraile district for one year. But the mammals from Castlepook and related southern Irish cave sites support an image of open, largely treeless country with patches of grassland, herb-rich ground, wet places and sparse shrub or tundra vegetation. Reindeer and mammoth point to landscapes able to sustain large grazers. Giant deer, brown bear, wolf, fox, mountain hare, lemmings and spotted hyaena reveal a more varied animal world than the later island fauna. Their presence does not mean that every species shared the same valley simultaneously, but it does show that Ireland could periodically support a substantial cold-stage fauna.

Predators were important agents in this environment as well as in the archaeological record. Spotted hyaena is known in Ireland most securely from Castlepook, and its bones indicate that the cave could serve as a carnivore den or refuge. Hyaenas compete, scavenge and transport bones; wolves do likewise in different ways. Their activity explains why the cave should not be imagined as a human home merely because humans may have touched one specimen in its collection. The cave was part of an ecological network in which carcasses, predators, weather and geology all left traces.

People at the North-Western Edge

If people were present, they were Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers, living without agriculture, pottery, metal or permanent villages. Their economy would have depended on knowledge of animal movements, stone, shelter, fuel and seasonal conditions. Reindeer offered meat, marrow, hide, sinew, antler and bone, but Castlepook cannot show which resources were taken from the particular animal. It cannot establish whether hunting was communal, whether a kill was planned, or whether the people involved travelled with children, possessions or dogs.

Nor is there evidence from Ireland at this date for political affairs, diplomacy, formal leadership, war, religious observance, art, teaching traditions or exchange networks. Such things may have existed among Upper Palaeolithic groups elsewhere in Europe, but Ireland’s record cannot responsibly fill these silences with borrowed stories. A visitor capable of using a sharp stone edge possessed learned skills, certainly; beyond that, claims about social organisation would be interpretation rather than evidence.

Comparison with north-west Europe gives only a broad context. Anatomically modern humans had long occupied parts of Europe by this stage of the Upper Palaeolithic, and mobile groups followed changing opportunities across its plains, coasts and river systems. Ireland lay at the far north-western edge of that wider world. Lower sea levels made the geography different from today, but did not guarantee an easy or permanent land route at every point: advancing ice, glacial lakes, rivers, exposed shelves and stormy coasts could all obstruct movement. The absence of a known Irish lithic industry is therefore as important as the marked femur.

What the Evidence Can Bear

The later fate of the landscape underlines the fragility of this possible human episode. As the last ice sheet grew, it covered Ireland and its continental shelf at maximum extent, eroding landscapes and helping to erase shallow archaeological sites. This helps explain why caves and isolated bones are disproportionately important. It does not, by itself, prove that a rich earlier archaeological record once existed; erosion is an explanation for loss, not a substitute for finds.

The contrast with the better-supported late Upper Palaeolithic evidence from Alice and Gwendoline Cave, County Clare, is instructive. There, a cut-marked brown-bear patella has two calibrated determinations of about 12,810–12,590 and 12,810–12,685 cal BP. That later evidence also indicates a limited human presence rather than a fully documented settlement history. Castlepook’s possible evidence is much older and, because it derives from an old and complex cave collection, needs even more caution.

Thus 31,658 BCE should not be presented as the year Ireland was settled, the year a named hunt occurred, or the beginning of an unbroken national story. It marks a scientifically important horizon around which Ireland’s deepest human past may be reconsidered. The firm evidence is of a cold, open landscape inhabited at different times by reindeer and other Ice Age mammals. The most provocative evidence is a reindeer femur bearing a mark interpreted as stone-tool butchery. Between those statements lies the proper space for future excavation, dating and debate.
