Around the interval containing 31,545 BCE, Ireland experienced unstable Late Pleistocene conditions during Marine Isotope Stage 3. At Derryvree near Maguiresbridge, inter-till freshwater sediments dated broadly to 36,900–31,700 calibrated years BP preserve evidence of treeless, tundra-like wetlands with sedges, mosses, herbs and shallow pools. Castlepook Cave in Cork records changing cold-adapted fauna, including reindeer, mammoth, lemmings and hyaenas. A possibly cut-marked reindeer femur suggests, but does not prove, human activity. No secure settlements, tools, hearths or social evidence survive. Glacial expansion, erosion and sea-level change obscured earlier landscapes, leaving fragments that demonstrate environmental possibilities rather than a recoverable annual history.

A Landscape Between Ice Advances

Derryvree’s position between two tills is its great importance. Till is sediment laid down by glacier ice; the lower and upper deposits show that ice occupied this part of Fermanagh at different times. Between them came an interval when freshwater sediments, plants and insects could accumulate. The resulting record demonstrates that Ireland’s last glacial history was neither one unbroken freeze nor a simple march towards the Last Glacial Maximum. Ice margins advanced, withdrew or became restricted; cold, open habitats appeared in some districts; and later glaciers often buried, disturbed or destroyed the evidence.

The Derryvree plant and insect remains indicate a treeless, periglacial wetland rather than a wooded Irish countryside. Sedges, grasses, herbs, mosses and small aquatic plants grew around shallow water and saturated ground. Pollen included juniper and a range of herbs, but the evidence does not support imagining a continuous forest. This was a landscape shaped by low temperatures, seasonal thaw, exposed soils and short growing seasons: a mosaic of open tundra-like ground, wet hollows, pools and mossy vegetation. Such places could be productive in summer, while remaining harsh and highly seasonal.

That local picture should not be inflated into an island-wide weather report. Other Fermanagh sites, including Greenagho and Hollymount, preserve related inter-till deposits, while cave records and offshore evidence add further pieces to a complicated chronology. Some reconstructions suggest that north-central Ireland retained ice-free ground until at least about 34,000 years ago; newer work also emphasises rapid, asynchronous growth of the wider British–Irish Ice Sheet around the transition from MIS 3 into MIS 2. The conclusion is not that every part of Ireland looked alike. Rather, around the broad span containing 31,545 BCE, available land, freshwater and animal habitat existed in some places even as glaciation was becoming an increasingly decisive force.

Caves and Cold-Adapted Animals

County Cork supplies the other major body of evidence. Castlepook Cave, near Doneraile in the Awbeg valley, has produced Ireland’s best-known assemblage of Late Pleistocene animal remains. Its historic collections include reindeer, woolly mammoth, giant deer, horse, wolf, fox, Arctic fox, hare, lemming and spotted hyaena. These are not the remains of one simultaneous herd or a neatly excavated single layer. Cave deposits accumulated through repeated episodes, and carnivores carried many bones into shelters. Improved radiocarbon dating has also shown that some older determinations required revision. Castlepook is consequently a record of changing Ice Age animal communities, not a snapshot of one day or one season.

Nonetheless, its fauna makes the Derryvree environment easier to understand. Reindeer and mammoth belong to open, cold-adapted ecosystems; Arctic fox and lemmings reinforce the northern character of parts of the fauna. Spotted hyaenas remind us that the landscape also supported powerful scavengers and predators. Caves may have served animals as dens, refuges or places where carcass parts accumulated. For an animal travelling through the limestone country of north Cork, river valleys and open ground could have offered routes through an environment unlike modern Ireland.

There is no basis for assigning every Castlepook species to the exact nominal year. Nor should fauna from a cave be used to claim a stable, flourishing ecosystem throughout the island. Yet the combined cave and wetland evidence makes one point secure: Ireland was not biologically empty during the later part of MIS 3. It contained, at intervals and in particular regions, cold-climate plants, insects and mammals capable of living in an open Pleistocene world.

The Reindeer Femur Question

Castlepook matters especially because a reindeer femur from the older collection has been publicised as dating to about 33,000 years ago and as bearing a deep incision interpreted by palaeozoologist Ruth Carden as a stone-tool butchery mark. If that interpretation is eventually confirmed through further contextual and microscopic work, it could be evidence that a person processed a reindeer in Ireland during MIS 3. It would push the possible human story of the island far earlier than the long-established terminal Pleistocene evidence from Alice and Gwendoline Cave in County Clare.

At present, however, the object must remain a significant but limited claim, not the foundation for a fully populated prehistoric Ireland. The date is a date for the bone, expressed publicly in rounded terms, rather than a calendar date for the incision. The judgement that a mark was made by a tool is a separate taphonomic question: trampling, carnivore action, breakage and post-depositional damage can sometimes produce superficially similar traces. Moreover, Castlepook has not yielded a securely associated hearth, stone-tool assemblage, dwelling floor, burial, or stratified camp deposit of this age. A single modified bone, if humanly modified, would demonstrate an encounter with an animal; it would not demonstrate permanent settlement, population size, ancestry, language or a continuous community.

That caution matters because Ireland’s Palaeolithic archaeology is exceptionally sparse. Later ice sheets eroded landscapes, shifted sediments and concealed older surfaces beneath till, while rising seas transformed coasts and drowned possible evidence. Absence of discoveries is not proof that no person ever entered Ireland, but nor is it permission to replace missing evidence with a detailed story. The nearest well-documented human histories in Britain and continental Europe show that Homo sapiens had sophisticated technologies, social networks and symbolic cultures by this broad period. Those facts make a visit to Ireland conceivable; they do not prove that any particular Irish cave group shared them.

Society Without a Settlement Record

Political affairs, diplomacy and organised conflict cannot be responsibly described for Ireland at this date. There are no named communities, territories, leaders, weapons caches, fortifications or exchange systems. There is equally no Irish evidence for religious observance, art, formal learning, burial practice or language. The silence is archaeological, not a judgement that any possible visitors lacked social lives, beliefs or knowledge. It means only that no securely dated Irish material allows those aspects of life to be reconstructed.

The same restraint applies to everyday economy. If people did handle the Castlepook reindeer, an animal could have offered meat, marrow, hide, sinew, bone and antler. But this is a general possibility, not evidence for a defined Irish hunting economy. There are no secure contemporary toolkits to show how animals were killed, no hearths to demonstrate cooking, no repeated kill sites, and no settlement debris to establish seasonal rounds. A short-lived hunting or scavenging episode would be a more modest inference than a village or a colony; even that remains dependent on confirmation of the femur mark.

Water, Mobility and Uncertainty

Low sea levels during the glacial period altered the outlines of Britain, Ireland and the continental shelf, but they do not solve the question of access. Ireland’s exact coastal geography changed through time, and surviving evidence does not identify a land route into the island at this date. If humans were present, they may have crossed water, travelled over seasonally altered coastal terrain, or reached areas whose former shorelines now lie beneath the sea. No Irish boat, landing place or route can be dated to this period. Assertions about a particular migration pathway would therefore outrun the evidence.

What can be said is that environmental change governed the possibilities of movement. Open terrain may have aided large grazing animals and mobile hunters, while advancing ice, severe winters and scarce shelter imposed profound constraints. Wetlands such as Derryvree’s offered water and vegetation, but were not gentle landscapes in the modern sense. Human survival, if there was human presence, would have depended on mobility, knowledge of seasonal resources and links beyond the island. These are reasonable ecological inferences, not directly observed Irish social facts.

An Archive of Possibilities

Ireland around the broad period represented by 31,545 BCE was a changing Ice Age landscape rather than a nation with a recoverable annual history. Derryvree’s buried freshwater beds show pools, mosses, sedges and treeless tundra-like ground during a calibrated interval of approximately 36,900–31,700 cal BP. Castlepook’s cave fauna shows that cold-adapted mammals occupied southern Ireland across parts of MIS 3. The disputed but intriguing reindeer femur raises the possibility of a human action, while also illustrating why exceptional claims demand exceptionally secure context.

The most important development was environmental: the narrowing window between cold but habitable land in some regions and the larger ice-sheet expansion that would later reshape the island. The archaeological lesson is equally important. Ireland’s deep past is preserved in fragments—pollen, seeds, insects, bones, cave sediments and glacial layers. Those fragments can illuminate an ancient world, but they cannot support invented rulers, battles or settlements. At Maguiresbridge, the quiet accumulation of organic mud beside Pleistocene pools is itself the historical record.
