Ireland experienced shifting coastlines, ice fronts and potential migration routes before maximum glaciation. Derryvree sediments in Fermanagh indicate cold, open, wet tundra conditions between glacial advances. Castlepook Cave’s fauna, including mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, predators and Arctic species, demonstrates a varied cold-stage ecosystem. A possibly tool-marked reindeer bone suggests, but cannot prove, brief human activity. No secure evidence supports settlement or continuity. Climatic deterioration later restricted habitats and corridors; securely evidenced human occupation belongs only to postglacial Ireland.

A Cold Interval Before Maximum Ice

Ireland was not yet uniformly buried beneath the last great ice sheet at this point. The British–Irish Ice Sheet would later expand across the island and beyond its present western shoreline, reaching its greatest Late Pleistocene extent tens of centuries afterwards. Work on the chronology of the ice sheet indicates a long build-up from broadly ice-free conditions in parts of Ireland at about 34,000 years ago to major expansion later in the glacial cycle. That broad reconstruction matters more than any claim that an ice margin stood at a precise place in 31,638 BCE.

The island’s geography also differed from the familiar modern map. Global sea level was substantially lower during the glacial period, exposing more of the continental shelves around Ireland and Britain. Yet lower sea level did not automatically create a simple, continuous walking route to every coast, nor can present evidence establish exactly which crossings were available in this particular year. It is safer to say that Ireland was part of a changing north-west European zone in which coastlines, shallow seas, ice fronts and animal routes repeatedly altered. Migration to and from the island was possible during some phases, but difficult, contingent and vulnerable to abrupt climatic change.

In this setting, “Ireland” was not a country, a people or a political territory. There were no known rulers, boundaries, alliances, diplomatic contacts or organised wars that archaeology can assign to the island. Nor is there evidence for villages, farms, monuments, graves, ritual sites, art, spoken languages or teaching traditions. These are not omissions in a fuller historical record: they are questions for which the surviving Irish evidence around this date is silent. The principal historical actors recoverable here are ice, water, plants, animals and, perhaps, occasional people.

Derryvree’s Tundra Evidence

The most informative window on Ireland near this broad period is at Derryvree, near Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh. Road works in 1969 cut through a drumlin and revealed organic-rich freshwater silts and fine sands lying between two tills: deposits laid down by ice. This sequence is exceptionally valuable because it records an earlier glacial advance, a later interval when open water and wet ground existed, and renewed ice cover after the sediments accumulated. It is evidence for changing environmental conditions rather than for a stable Ice Age landscape.

A radiocarbon determination from Derryvree was reported as 30,500 years BP, with a large uncertainty. Subsequent discussion and calibration place the deposit broadly within an interval of about 36,900–31,700 calibrated years BP. The nominal year 31,638 BCE, approximately 33,587 cal BP, falls within that very wide calibrated span. This does not mean that the Derryvree wetland can be dated to the year in question. It means that the deposit is among the best available environmental comparators for Ireland around it.

The organic layers contained freshwater mosses and sedges, pollen of predominantly herbaceous plants, and insect evidence of cold northern conditions. Plant macrofossils included species associated with open, wet, tundra-like ground; pollen preservation was poor, so the record must not be read as a complete botanical census. Still, its combined signals strongly support a periglacial landscape: ground repeatedly affected by frost, sparse vegetation on better-drained surfaces, and pools, marshes or sluggish freshwater in sheltered hollows. It was not an evergreen wilderness or a blanket of snow without life. Nor was it later prehistoric Ireland stripped of its woods. Trees, if present locally at all, were not forming the closed forest familiar from the post-glacial Holocene.

The Derryvree evidence also helps to explain why later ice has made the earlier human record so elusive. Glaciers erode, redistribute and bury sediments. A habitat may have been available for centuries, yet camps, hearths, footprints and stone tools can subsequently be removed or concealed under till. The absence of a known camp from this period is consequently not proof that no person ever stood on Irish ground; it is, however, decisive against inventing a settled population or a continuous Irish community.

Castlepook and the Faunal Record

Far to the south, Castlepook Cave near Doneraile, County Cork—also called Mammoth Cave—offers another, very different archive. Excavations conducted principally in the early twentieth century recovered a remarkable collection of Pleistocene animal remains. Material from Castlepook includes woolly mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, brown bear, wolf, Arctic fox, mountain hare, lemmings and spotted hyaena. The National Museum of Ireland regards the cave as the country’s most important source of mammal remains from the last cold stage. These animals did not necessarily occupy the cave simultaneously, and the old excavations disturbed or inadequately recorded parts of the deposits. The collection is powerful evidence of a fauna over a lengthy period, not a snapshot of a single landscape on a single day.

Nevertheless, it shows that Ireland could at times support, or be visited by, a varied cold-stage animal community. Reindeer imply open ground and seasonal grazing opportunities; lemmings and Arctic fox point towards strongly northern ecological conditions. Mammoth and giant deer evoke a productive but exposed mosaic of herbs, grasses, sedges and low shrubs rather than dense woodland. Wolves and spotted hyaenas remind us that carcasses were contested resources. Cave accumulations may result from animals dying naturally, predators dragging in prey, scavenging, water movement and human activity. Bone assemblages therefore need painstaking contextual analysis before they become stories of hunts or households.

A reindeer femur from Castlepook has become central to debate about the earliest possible human activity in Ireland. Ruth Carden identified a deep mark on the bone as consistent with cutting or chopping by a sharp stone tool, and a date of roughly 33,000 years ago has been widely publicised for the specimen. If that interpretation and association are sustained by further research, it would suggest a brief Upper Palaeolithic human presence far earlier than the previously accepted Irish evidence. But it is not a securely excavated campsite, no human remains have been found, and the specimen derives from historic cave excavations with limited modern stratigraphic control. The National Museum of Ireland accordingly continues to state that clear Palaeolithic evidence for humankind in Ireland has not emerged.

That caution is not pedantry. A cut-marked bone can demonstrate a specific action only if the mark’s origin, timing and archaeological context can be tested. It cannot, by itself, identify the hunter’s language, sex, age, homeland, social group, route of travel or length of stay. Around 31,638 BCE, Castlepook is best understood as evidence for a potentially habitable animal corridor and a tantalising possibility of human butchery, not proof of Ireland’s first settled society.

Mobility Rather Than Settlement

If people did reach Ireland in this phase, their most plausible economy would have been highly mobile hunting and gathering, comparable in broad terms to Upper Palaeolithic lifeways elsewhere in north-west Europe. Reindeer, other large herbivores and the predictable places where animals crossed valleys or approached water would have offered food, hides, bone, antler and sinew. But this is an inference from the animal record and continental comparison, not direct Irish evidence for a camp, tool kit or seasonal round. No traded object, quarry, boat, dwelling or food-processing area has been securely dated to this time in Ireland.

There is likewise no responsible basis for describing political affairs, conflict, diplomacy, formal religion or learning. Small mobile groups elsewhere in Ice Age Europe certainly possessed sophisticated knowledge, social relationships and symbolic practices, but none may simply be transferred to Ireland. An encounter over a reindeer carcass, a short hunting visit, or a predator’s use of a cave would be historically significant here precisely because the island sat at the fragile north-western edge of a wider human and animal world.

An Unstable Future

Crag Cave in County Kerry preserves calcite formations whose episodes of growth track warmer pulses during the last glacial period. Because stalagmites require infiltrating liquid water, their growth provides independent evidence that south-west Ireland responded sharply to millennial-scale climatic shifts. In colder phases, permafrost and frozen ground curtailed such growth; in milder interstadials, water could again circulate through shallow cave systems. The lesson for 31,638 BCE is not that the whole island shared one uniform temperature, but that Irish environments could change markedly over intervals short by geological standards and long by human ones.

That instability ultimately shaped the historical outcome. As climatic deterioration continued and the last ice sheet grew, habitable patches and animal corridors contracted or were rearranged. Any early visitors to Ireland left, if they came at all, no demonstrated continuous descendant community through the glacial maximum. Secure evidence for people returns only much later, after deglaciation, in a very different island world. Around this nominal year, the most defensible history is thus one of open, cold wetlands and grass-herb country; large mammals and carnivores moving through a changing landscape; caves preserving fragmentary bones; and a single contested clue that may yet bring people into the picture.
