At Derryvree, County Fermanagh, freshwater sediments between glacial tills preserve evidence of an ice-free interval, broadly 36,900–31,700 calibrated years BP. Plant remains indicate an open, periglacial tundra wetland of pools, mosses, sedges, dwarf willow, mountain-avens and bogbean. Later ice buried the deposit as the British-Irish Ice Sheet expanded. Castlepook Cave, County Cork, records diverse cold-stage mammals, including reindeer, mammoth and hyaena. A marked reindeer bone may suggest brief human butchery, but cannot demonstrate settlement. A Date Within a Range

The best Irish environmental evidence relevant to this point comes from Derryvree, near Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh. Road construction in 1969 cut through a drumlin and exposed an extraordinary sequence: a lower layer of glacial till, then freshwater silts and fine sands containing organic remains, and finally a second till deposited by later ice. The order of these layers is crucial. It shows that, between two episodes of glaciation, this locality was not beneath moving ice long enough for shallow water and wet ground to develop.

Organic material from the Derryvree deposit returned a conventional radiocarbon determination of 30,500 +1,170/−1,030 radiocarbon years BP. A radiocarbon age is not a calendar age: atmospheric carbon-14 has varied through time, and results must be calibrated against independently dated records. Published discussion using modern calibration places the Derryvree deposit broadly at about 36,900–31,700 calibrated years BP, roughly 34,950–29,750 BCE. That wide range encompasses 31,062 BCE, but it does not mean that the exposed mud was laid down in that precise year, or that every part of Ireland shared its conditions.

This distinction matters. Derryvree is evidence for one north-western Irish locality during a long cold interval. It is not a weather report for the entire island, still less a record of an Irish nation or population. The deposits nevertheless provide one of the few securely located archives from which the landscape around this broad date can be reconstructed.

An Open, Cold Wetland

The plants and small animal remains preserved at Derryvree point to open tundra vegetation and a periglacial climate: a severe environment affected by frost and cold-season ground freezing, but not necessarily covered by glacier ice at the moment the sediments accumulated. Pollen was poorly preserved, yet macrofossils and other botanical traces are unusually informative. They include mosses and plants associated with damp, cold ground and shallow freshwater, among them dwarf willow, mountain-avens and bogbean. Sedge-rich vegetation and sparse herbaceous cover would have occupied wet margins and better-drained patches.

The word “tundra” should not conjure a featureless snowfield. The Derryvree evidence suggests a mosaic of pools, silty shallows, wet mossy ground and exposed mineral soils, changing with season and water level. Bogbean, a plant of freshwater and marshy margins, is especially evocative because a fossil seed survives from the deposit. Its presence demonstrates that some standing or slow-moving water was available locally. Such details make the Irish landscape more varied than the simple image of an island sealed under ice.

There was, however, no woodland comparable to later Irish forests. The evidence supports an open landscape in which low vegetation was adapted to cold, wind, short growing seasons and disturbed ground. The capacity of this setting to sustain grazing animals depended on seasonal plant growth and on the shifting geography of ice, water and bare ground. Conditions may have altered sharply across short distances, especially near glacier margins, and changed repeatedly across centuries and millennia.

Before the Ice Sheet’s Maximum

This was not yet the fullest extent of the last British–Irish Ice Sheet. Current reconstructions generally place its final maximum advance between about 27,000 and 23,000 calibrated years BP, later than the Derryvree interval relevant to 31,062 BCE. At its maximum, ice extended widely across Ireland and onto the surrounding continental shelf. The later till that sealed the Derryvree freshwater beds records the return of glacial conditions to that particular district.

It would be misleading, though, to imagine a simple, steady march from green land to universal ice. Marine Isotope Stage 3 was marked by pronounced climatic oscillations in the North Atlantic world. Ice margins advanced and retreated; vegetation and animal habitats responded; and sediments could be eroded, redeposited or buried. Derryvree’s two tills with an organic interval between them are physical evidence for such complexity. They also explain why preservation is uneven. Later ice was capable of stripping earlier soils and archaeological traces from extensive areas, leaving caves and sealed sediments disproportionately important to research.

Regional change therefore dominates this date. Fermanagh’s freshwater basin was part of an Irish landscape in transition, increasingly constrained by cold and by the growth of ice masses, yet locally capable of supporting wetland plants. The environment cannot be reduced to a national average, and the exact shape of coasts, valleys and ice-free corridors remains a matter of reconstruction rather than direct observation.

Caves and Ice-Age Animals

In southern Ireland, Castlepook Cave near Doneraile in County Cork supplies a different kind of evidence: bones rather than a wetland flora. The cave is one of Ireland’s most important deposits for mammals living before the Last Glacial Maximum. Its assemblages, accumulated over more than one period and through more than one process, include remains of reindeer, brown bear, wolf or fox, hare, lemmings, giant deer, woolly mammoth and spotted hyaena. Not all were contemporary, and none should be assembled into a single imagined scene at 31,062 BCE. Their value lies in demonstrating that parts of Ireland were accessible to a varied cold-stage fauna during Marine Isotope Stage 3.

Recent redating has transformed the significance of Castlepook. Improved pretreatment of bone collagen showed that several earlier radiocarbon measurements had made material appear substantially younger than it was. The revised work indicates a deeper, pre-Last Glacial Maximum history for some species, while also warning against building historical narratives on old dates alone. Cave deposits are especially challenging: bones may have been brought in by carnivores, carried by water, disturbed by excavation or derived from layers of very different ages.

Spotted hyaena is a powerful reminder that the Late Pleistocene animal world was not simply a modern Irish fauna in colder weather. Its presence at Castlepook belongs to an earlier part of the cave’s MIS 3 record and indicates ecological connections with Britain and continental north-west Europe. Reindeer, in turn, were well suited to open country, while small mammals such as lemmings indicate severe conditions. These fossils establish environmental possibility, not a settled human landscape.

The Human Question

A reindeer femur from Castlepook has attracted exceptional attention because it bears a deep linear mark interpreted by zooarchaeologist Ruth Carden as a cut or chop made with a sharp stone implement on fresh bone. The specimen has been associated in public discussion with an age of about 33,000 radiocarbon years BP. If the interpretation is upheld, it could represent Ireland’s earliest known evidence for human handling of an animal, many millennia earlier than the securely documented post-glacial settlement record.

The claim must remain carefully bounded. A modified bone can indicate the processing of a carcass; it does not prove a permanent settlement, a village, a population spread across the island or a named Palaeolithic culture in Ireland. No securely associated hearth, stone-tool assemblage, dwelling surface, burial or repeated concentration of butchered remains has yet been demonstrated at Castlepook for this age. Excavations in 2022 located surviving cave sediments and Pleistocene faunal material, but recovered no cultural artefacts. The work is important precisely because it leaves open the prospect of better-contexted evidence rather than resolving the question prematurely.

If people did reach Ireland during this broad interval, they would have been highly mobile hunter-gatherers operating at the far western edge of Upper Palaeolithic Europe. Reindeer could have offered meat, fat, hide, sinew and bone, but those are general possibilities, not documented Irish practices. There is no responsible basis for describing their language, kinship, shelters, seasonal route or numbers. Even a brief visit by a small hunting party would be archaeologically significant; it would still be very different from sustained colonisation.

No Politics, No Trade, No Recorded Belief

Political affairs, diplomacy and organised warfare are beyond the reach of the evidence for Ireland around 31,062 BCE. There are no rulers, territories, monuments, written traditions or identifiable communities to name. Nor is there evidence for trade networks, farming, metalworking, seafaring exchange or formal religious practice. These are not missing chapters awaiting a confident retelling; they are questions for which the surviving record is silent.

Culture and learning can be discussed only in the broadest human sense. The possible Castlepook bone mark, if anthropogenic, implies practical knowledge of cutting implements and animal anatomy. Derryvree’s plant remains reveal nothing directly about human knowledge, but they illuminate the demanding setting in which any visitors would have moved. The decisive history of this date is environmental: short-lived ice-free habitats, cold-water wetlands, animal movements and the looming expansion of ice.

For Ireland, then, 31,062 BCE is best understood not as a year of events but as a point within a long calibrated range. Beneath a Fermanagh drumlin, freshwater mud preserved the signature of an open tundra wetland. In a Cork cave, bones preserve a more fragmentary record of Ice-Age mammals and a cautious possibility of human activity. Together they show an island that was neither timelessly frozen nor recognisably inhabited, but environmentally dynamic, sparsely evidenced and on the threshold of far more extensive glaciation.
