Awbeg Valley Reindeer

The label “31,877 BCE” is a modern way of placing a very remote point in time, not a year that can be recovered from Irish archaeology. No calendar, written record or excavated sequence can isolate events in Ireland to that single year. In calibrated terms, it indicates roughly 33,800 calendar years before present, within the later part of the Pleistocene and broadly within Marine Isotope Stage 3. Dates at this depth carry ranges and depend on laboratory methods and calibration curves. The responsible subject, therefore, is not an imagined Irish year but the changing Ice Age world that can be glimpsed around this broad interval.

A Landscape Before the Ice Maximum

This was long before the Last Glacial Maximum, the coldest and most extensive phase of the last glaciation in Ireland. Recent reconstructions of the British–Irish Ice Sheet indicate major growth from about 31,000 calibrated years before present, with different sectors advancing at different times; the ice sheet’s greatest volume came much later, around 23,000 years ago. Around the notional date represented by 31,877 BCE, Ireland should not be pictured simply as a single white mass of permanent ice. Conditions, ice margins and habitable ground varied sharply by region and through time.

Even so, this was an austere northern landscape. Temperatures were generally low, winters severe and vegetation unlike the wooded island familiar today. The best direct Irish environmental evidence comes from deposits that bracket broad intervals rather than a precise year. At Derryvree near Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh, freshwater silts and sands were preserved between two tills: deposits of an ice-influenced landscape. Their fossil pollen, mosses, insects and other remains indicate open, treeless tundra or muskeg, with wet pools, sedges, grasses, herbs and moss-rich ground under periglacial conditions. A radiocarbon determination from the deposit, 30,500 ± roughly 1,100 radiocarbon years BP, is not a date for one moment and must not be converted into a claim about 31,877 BCE. It nevertheless provides an important regional picture of cold-stage Ireland during the wider Middle Midlandian period.

Such evidence also corrects a tempting misconception. “Ice Age” did not mean an unchanging frozen wilderness. Northern Atlantic climates fluctuated markedly over centuries and millennia. Open ground could support plants, insects and grazing animals; wetlands and sheltered valleys could differ greatly from exposed uplands. Yet the very processes that shaped this terrain—glacial advance, freeze-thaw, running water and later erosion—also destroyed or buried much of the evidence that archaeologists would most like to find.

The Cave Archive at Castlepook

The most important Irish evidence for this broad period lies far to the south, at Castlepook Cave near Doneraile in north County Cork, above the Awbeg valley. The cave is Ireland’s richest known archive for Pleistocene vertebrate remains. Antiquarian excavators removed very large quantities of bone from its chambers in the early twentieth century, and later work has re-examined surviving collections with radiocarbon dating and zooarchaeology. The resulting record shows that animals occupied, visited or were carried into the cave over a long span of time before and near the Last Glacial Maximum.

The Castlepook assemblage includes mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, wolf, brown bear, spotted hyaena, foxes, hare and lemmings. It is an extraordinary list, but it must not be treated as a census taken on a single day or in a single season. Caves are time-averaging traps and dens. Carnivores drag in prey; animals die in shelter; bones are gnawed, moved and mixed; water and excavation disturb their contexts. Different specimens have different ages. The fauna demonstrates that parts of Ireland could sustain, or at least be reached by, large herbivores and predators during favourable phases. It does not prove that every listed species shared the Awbeg valley at precisely 31,877 BCE.

Reindeer are especially evocative because they fit the open, cold-adapted environments suggested at Derryvree. Their presence points towards forage such as grasses, sedges, herbs, lichens and low vegetation rather than dense forest. Mammoth and giant deer add weight to the picture of substantial grazing animals in parts of pre-maximum-glacial Ireland, while hyaena, wolves and bears indicate a food web with predators, scavengers and competition for carcasses and cave shelter. But ecology is not politics: these bones reveal animal communities and changing habitats, not a humanly organised landscape.

A Possible Human Trace

Castlepook has also become central to a more difficult question: whether people reached Ireland during this earlier phase of the Upper Palaeolithic. A reindeer femur from the historic collection has been reported as bearing marks consistent with cutting by a sharp stone tool. It was publicised after radiocarbon dating placed the animal at about 33,000 years ago, broadly close to the timescale represented by this article. If the mark is confirmed as human-made and contemporary with the animal’s death, it would be evidence that people processed a reindeer in Ireland far earlier than had once been accepted.

That conditional wording is essential. The bone did not come from a newly excavated, sealed occupation surface with an associated hearth, stone-tool assemblage or dwelling. Castlepook’s old collections and disturbed deposits make the original context difficult to reconstruct. Cut marks have to be distinguished from carnivore damage, trampling, breakage, excavation damage and other alterations. Continuing cave survey, excavation, dating and microscopic study may strengthen, refine or challenge the interpretation. At present, the specimen is a significant possible sign of human activity, not proof of a permanent colony.

No securely identified Irish settlement, burial, built shelter, hearth, art panel or diagnostic stone-tool industry has been published for this date. Nor can any inhabitants, if present, be given a personal name, language, tribe or ethnic identity. It would be anachronistic to call them “Irish” in the later cultural sense. The most that can responsibly be inferred is that a small and mobile Upper Palaeolithic hunting party may have entered or passed through part of the island during a period when game was available. Their stay could have been brief; their route, numbers and relationship to groups in Britain or continental Europe remain unknown.

Everyday Life: Evidence and Inference

If people did butcher reindeer at Castlepook, the act implies practical knowledge: how to dismember a carcass and how to use sharp-edged tools. Meat, fat, marrow, hide, sinew and bone would all have been valuable resources in cold country. Comparable hunter-gatherers elsewhere in Upper Palaeolithic Europe depended on co-operation, portable equipment, warm clothing and temporary shelter. Those are sensible human necessities, but they are not excavated Irish possessions. The distinction matters. Ireland has no evidence from this interval for tents, garments, lamps, carved objects or communal camps, and comparison with better-preserved European sites cannot fill that gap.

The same restraint applies to travel and exchange. Global sea level was much lower than today because water was locked in ice sheets, and the outlines of the Irish Sea, Atlantic shelf and coastal plains differed greatly from modern maps. Yet low sea level does not automatically mean a simple dry-land bridge to Ireland. Ice cover, local relative sea level, channels, islands and shifting shorelines complicate every proposed route. The available evidence does not establish whether any hypothetical visitors crossed water, moved via temporary land connections, travelled over ice-influenced terrain, or reached Ireland by another sequence of journeys.

What Cannot Be Written

There is no evidence for political authority, diplomacy, organised warfare, law, chiefs, territories or named communities in Ireland at this date. Equally, there is no Irish evidence for farming, herding, fixed villages, trade networks, formal religion, monuments, literacy or teaching institutions. Later prehistoric Ireland supplies abundant evidence for many of these subjects, but it lies tens of millennia in the future. To project them back into the Awbeg valley would turn a sparse Pleistocene record into fiction.

Religion and culture are particularly resistant to recovery. Upper Palaeolithic people elsewhere made art, ornaments and carefully fashioned tools, but no corresponding Irish material can presently be assigned to around 31,877 BCE. A cave is not automatically a sanctuary, and an animal bone is not automatically a ritual object. Castlepook’s significance is more fundamental: it preserves a fragmentary biological and environmental archive from an Ireland whose landscapes, coastlines and animal inhabitants were profoundly different from those of later human history.

Thus the most important development around this notional date is neither a battle nor a royal accession. It is the existence of a cold, open and ecologically varied Irish landscape before the greatest advance of the last ice sheet, documented by deposits in Fermanagh and by cave fauna in Cork. Alongside it stands a challenging possibility: that one marked reindeer bone may eventually show that small human groups reached this far-western environment. For now, the evidence supports a cautious conclusion—Ice Age Ireland was not empty of life, but the story of people within it remains tantalisingly incomplete.
