Around 31,674 BCE, Ireland lay within the variable MIS 3 phase of the last glacial period, before the Last Glacial Maximum. Rather than a uniformly frozen landscape, it contained regionally diverse open habitats of grasses, sedges, shrubs and wet ground, shaped by changing ice and lower seas. Castlepook Cave in north Cork preserves bones of mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, hyaena and other cold-adapted animals, indicating a dynamic food web, though deposits span long periods. Sediments elsewhere provide botanical evidence. A marked reindeer femur may indicate human visitation, but remains contested. No evidence supports permanent settlement, polities, beliefs or continuous occupation.

A Pre-LGM Island

At this broad date Ireland was in the Midlandian, the Irish term for the last glacial period, but it was not yet necessarily the uniformly ice-covered island of popular imagination. The full Last Glacial Maximum came later, broadly after c. 26,000 calibrated years before present, and ice-sheet growth was neither instantaneous nor geographically uniform. Exposure dating of upland landforms has been used to argue that parts of north-central Ireland remained ice-free until at least about 34,000 years ago. Other reconstructions show that the British–Irish Ice Sheet subsequently expanded dramatically, reaching the Atlantic shelf west of Ireland only much later in the glacial cycle.

That distinction matters. Around the broad horizon represented by 31,674 BCE, Ireland was an unstable northern landscape at the edge of changing ice masses, not a settled green island separated by its modern coastline. Temperatures and precipitation could alter sharply over centuries and millennia. Permafrost, seasonal snow, wind-blown sediments, exposed rock and wet ground are all more appropriate elements of the picture than forests, peatlands or familiar pasture. However, conditions varied by region, altitude and season; a single phrase such as “frozen Ireland” conceals as much as it explains.

The sea was also lower than today because large volumes of water were locked in continental ice. Ireland’s shore lay farther from many present coasts, and the Irish Sea basin had a different geography. This would have changed routes available to animals and potentially to people. It does not, by itself, prove a continuous dry-land bridge from Ireland to Britain or continental Europe at this particular date. The existence, duration and passability of routes depended on shifting sea level, ice position, channels and local terrain.

The Castlepook Faunal Record

The most important Irish locality for this period is Castlepook Cave, also called Mammoth Cave or Doneraile Cave, near Doneraile in north County Cork. Excavations from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries recovered an exceptional quantity of bones from its limestone passages. The assemblage includes mammals associated with cold, open habitats: woolly mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, brown bear, wolf, fox, Arctic fox, mountain hare, collared lemming and Norwegian lemming. Spotted hyaena is especially significant. Its presence establishes that Ireland’s fauna was not merely a small, isolated survival of hardy herbivores, but included large predators and scavengers within a functioning food web.

Such a list should not be mistaken for a census of animals standing together in one Cork valley in 31,674 BCE. Cave collections accumulated over long spans. Old excavators did not record contexts to modern standards; deposits were disturbed in places, and bones from different episodes could be mixed. Furthermore, modern re-dating has shown that some earlier radiocarbon determinations on Irish cave bones were substantially too young because advances in sample preparation can remove contaminants more effectively. Castlepook is consequently powerful evidence for an Ice-Age fauna in Ireland, but it must be read specimen by specimen rather than as a perfectly sealed snapshot.

The revised dates nevertheless place important elements of the southern Irish fauna within MIS 3, before the Last Glacial Maximum. Research has suggested that giant deer and spotted hyaena may have disappeared locally before about 40,000 calibrated years before present, while other species persisted into later phases. Their histories were not identical. Animals colonised, withdrew, died out locally or returned as climate, vegetation and access changed. Ireland’s Pleistocene fauna was therefore dynamic, and its apparent gaps may reflect both real ecological absence and the uneven survival of evidence.

Open Ground and Seasonal Movement

Animal remains and palaeoenvironmental sequences together point towards predominantly open vegetation: a mosaic of grasses, sedges, dwarf shrubs, herbs and patches of wet ground, with little or no closed woodland. In northern Ireland, organic beds preserved beneath later glacial sediments at sites including Derryvree near Maguiresbridge retain pollen, plant macrofossils and freshwater evidence from earlier cold-stage intervals. These deposits demonstrate the value of small, protected basins in recovering landscapes lost elsewhere to ice erosion. They also warn against treating all of Ireland as environmentally identical.

Reindeer were well suited to mobile use of a seasonal, treeless environment; lemmings and Arctic fox reinforce the evidence for cold open country. Mammoth and giant deer indicate that sufficient plant productivity existed, at least in favourable seasons and districts, to support very large herbivores. Wolves and hyaenas depended on prey, carrion or both. Caves may have served as dens, refuges, trap-like repositories or places into which bones were dragged, rather than as ordinary sites of animal death. Their contents show ecological relationships, but cannot reveal every migration route or population size.

There was no agriculture. No crops, livestock, fields, houses, pottery, metalwork or managed woodland can be attributed to Ireland at this date. “Economy” is therefore best understood ecologically: the movement of animals, the availability of plant foods and the seasonal distribution of shelter, water and carcasses. Any human visitors would have depended on hunting, scavenging, gathering and transported supplies. There is no evidence for permanent occupation, stored harvests, exchange networks, ports or a resident population comparable with the Mesolithic communities securely documented many millennia later.

The Reindeer Femur Question

A single object has made this era unusually important in debates over the Irish Palaeolithic: a reindeer femur from the Castlepook material bearing a deep linear mark. Ruth Carden has interpreted the modification as a cut or chopping mark made on fresh bone by a sharp stone tool. The bone has been publicly connected with an age of roughly 33,000 years ago, and this interpretation has been presented as possible evidence that people processed reindeer in Ireland during the Ice Age.

If the mark is human-made and the specimen’s chronological association is upheld, its significance is considerable. It would show an episode of human activity far earlier than the island’s formerly accepted archaeological record, and broadly close to the chronological world evoked by this entry. It could imply that Upper Palaeolithic people reached Ireland while cold-stage fauna were present. Processing a carcass might have supplied meat, marrow, hide, sinew or bone. But it would demonstrate an encounter, not a village, a people’s name, a territory or an unbroken settlement history.

The limits are equally important. The femur derives from an old cave collection rather than a modern excavation of a sealed occupation surface. No associated hearth, stone-tool collection, dwelling, burial, butchered assemblage or repeated sequence of visits of equivalent age has been securely published from Castlepook. Bone surfaces can be altered by carnivores, trampling, sediment movement, excavation and curation, so marks require microscopic and contextual assessment. For this reason, the most careful description is possible early human presence or visitation, not proof of a settled Irish Upper Palaeolithic population.

No Polities, No Recorded Beliefs

Political history cannot responsibly be written for Ireland in 31,674 BCE. There is no evidence for chiefs, kingdoms, warfare, diplomacy, laws, ethnic names or territorial borders. Nor is there evidence for religious institutions, formal burial practice, monuments, visual art or teaching traditions on the island at this time. The cave itself should not be called a sanctuary simply because it was a dramatic place later excavated for bones. Such claims would import expectations from far later prehistoric societies into a period for which the material record is exceptionally thin.

That absence is itself historically meaningful. Ireland’s human story was not a smooth march from Ice-Age hunters to later farmers. The future Last Glacial Maximum would transform or obliterate many habitable areas, and any earlier visitors need not have left descendants or a continuous cultural tradition. The next securely better-attested episodes of human activity belong much later, after climatic improvement, and the familiar Mesolithic settlement record begins only in the early Holocene.

What This Moment Can Tell Us

The best-supported image of Ireland around this calendrical point is thus a cold, open and changing island or near-island landscape, still capable in some places of sustaining large grazers, predators and scavengers. North Cork’s caves preserve a fragmentary record of that world: mammoth, reindeer, giant deer, hyaena and smaller cold-adapted animals, accumulated through natural processes over long periods. Subglacial and inter-till sediments elsewhere preserve complementary botanical traces. Together they establish environmental possibility, not a day-by-day narrative.

Modern calendar-year precision is unavailable. A date written as 31,674 BCE is useful for ordering an archive, but calibrated ranges, laboratory uncertainty, changing radiocarbon calibration curves and disturbed deposits set the true resolution. The archaeological lesson is not that nothing happened in Ireland. Rather, it is that the surviving evidence allows only a narrow conclusion: before the Last Glacial Maximum, Ireland intermittently supported a diverse Ice-Age fauna, and one contested reindeer bone may preserve the faintest sign that people briefly entered that world.
