Before the Great Ice

A Range Rather Than a Year

Radiocarbon ages need calibration against changing atmospheric carbon levels, and calibrated ranges, not neat calendar points, are the appropriate measure. The date assigned to this article lies approximately 33,900 calendar years before 1950, but the nearest Irish evidence does not provide a securely dated event in 31,958 BCE itself. Nor do we possess a human skeleton, hearth, dwelling floor, stone-tool assemblage, burial or settlement that can be assigned to this point. What can be discussed is a changing Irish environment and a small, important body of faunal and archaeological evidence spanning several millennia before the major ice expansion.

This was not yet the climatic maximum of the last ice age. Research on the British–Irish Ice Sheet generally places its maximum Irish extent later, broadly around 27,000–23,000 calibrated years BP, although the timing, thickness and behaviour of ice varied markedly between regions. At around 31,958 BCE, colder conditions and advancing ice were part of a longer, irregular process rather than a single sudden ‘freeze’. Some evidence from western Ireland indicates substantial ice loading before the maximum, while other records show that local conditions and ice limits changed through time. It would be misleading to draw a fixed coastline or a uniform ice margin for this exact notional year.

Castlepook and the Human Question

The most directly relevant site is Castlepook Cave, also called Doneraile Cave, near Doneraile in north County Cork. The cave system in the Awbeg Valley yielded a rich collection of Ice Age animal remains during antiquarian excavations, but much original contextual information was lost or limited. This matters greatly: bones recovered from old cave collections are powerful evidence for the presence of animals, but are less able to reveal exactly where an animal died, where it was eaten, or how long its remains lay exposed before entering the cave.

A reindeer femur from Castlepook has been publicly identified as carrying a deep mark interpreted as having been made by a sharp stone tool during butchery. County Cork heritage material dates the bone to about 31,000 BCE, making it the closest known evidence to the present article’s notional date. If that interpretation is confirmed, it would indicate that a person used a lithic edge on fresh reindeer bone in Ireland during the Upper Palaeolithic. It would be a major revision to the older view that Ireland lacked evidence of human presence before the terminal Pleistocene.

Yet the distinction between evidence and interpretation is essential. The bone’s age dates the animal, not necessarily every action affecting it. Identifying a surface mark as a cut made by a human requires taphonomic judgement: researchers must separate stone-tool damage from carnivore activity, trampling, sediment abrasion, excavation damage and later handling. The cave’s animal assemblage also reflects the activities of predators and scavengers. The Castlepook indication is therefore best described as compelling potential evidence for human butchery, not proof of a permanently settled population, a named hunting band, or a continuous Irish occupation.

Renewed work at Castlepook is designed precisely to improve this position. Researchers have mapped and excavated parts of the cave, seeking surviving undisturbed deposits, secure stratigraphy, fresh dating samples, palaeoenvironmental evidence and artefacts such as stone tools or charcoal. Until such evidence is recovered and published, no particular Upper Palaeolithic culture can responsibly be assigned to Ireland around this date. Terms such as Aurignacian and Gravettian describe well-attested continental and British archaeological traditions, but Ireland presently lacks the diagnostic assemblages needed to identify either here.

An Ice-Age Animal Landscape

Even without a secure camp site, Ireland’s cave deposits establish that the island supported a much richer Late Pleistocene fauna than its later history might suggest. The Irish Quaternary Fauna Project found evidence that a range of mammals reached Ireland between at least about 45,000 and 20,000 years ago. Castlepook is particularly important in this story. Its pre-Last Glacial Maximum deposits have produced remains of reindeer, woolly mammoth, brown bear, giant deer and spotted hyaena, while other cave sites add further evidence for animals moving through changing Irish habitats.

Not every species was necessarily present in every valley or every century. Nevertheless, reindeer and mammoth are historically supportable elements of an Irish landscape around the wider period. Two red-deer specimens from south-eastern Irish caves have calibrated pre-Last Glacial Maximum dates spanning approximately 32,930–29,594 cal BP, broadly overlapping the centuries surrounding this article’s date. Such finds show that conditions could support both cold-adapted and, at times, relatively temperate fauna during the climatic fluctuations of Marine Isotope Stage 3. They do not demonstrate a stable, uniformly wooded Ireland, nor a single unchanging ‘mammoth steppe’ across the whole island.

For any people who did reach Ireland, large animals would have offered meat, fat, hide, sinew, bone and antler. But the archaeology does not permit a detailed Irish subsistence economy. There are no confirmed contemporary kill-sites, food residues, hearths, weapon points or butchered assemblages from which to reconstruct hunting seasons, group size, gendered work or the division of food. The Castlepook femur, if anthropogenic, suggests animal processing; it does not establish whether people hunted the reindeer, encountered a carcass, or merely removed useful material from it.

Travel, Isolation and Missing Evidence

Low global sea levels altered north-west European geography, exposing parts of continental shelves that are now submerged. But this did not automatically make Ireland an easy extension of Britain or continental Europe. The precise geography of the Irish Sea during the Late Pleistocene was complex, affected by sea level, ice cover, local land movement and glacial lakes. More importantly, access is not evidence of movement. If people were present at Castlepook, their arrival route remains unknown. They may have crossed temporarily exposed terrain, travelled along coasts, or used watercraft; none of these possibilities can presently be demonstrated for this particular period.

Glaciation helps explain why the evidence is so sparse. Later ice repeatedly eroded, transported and buried older surfaces, while post-glacial rising seas drowned former coastal zones where small mobile groups may have camped. Caves can preserve bones and sediment pockets, but they are selective archives, often shaped by animals, water and past digging. A lack of campsites should not be converted simply into proof that nobody visited Ireland; equally, the survival of one modified bone cannot be inflated into a populated landscape. The archaeological record is both fragmentary and uneven.

No Polities, No Recorded Conflict

Political affairs, diplomacy and warfare cannot be recovered for Ireland at this date. There were no known states, written agreements, rulers, tribal names or territorial boundaries. If humans were present, they would have belonged to small, mobile Upper Palaeolithic communities whose social relationships must remain unknown in the specifically Irish case. Archaeology elsewhere in Europe shows that people of this broad era possessed sophisticated stone technologies, social networks and symbolic practices, but those wider parallels are context, not evidence that identical systems operated in Ireland.

There is likewise no direct Irish basis for describing formal religion, shrines, art, schooling, language or inherited myth at 31,958 BCE. The rich ceremonial burial at Paviland Cave in south Wales, dated to about 26,000 BP, demonstrates that symbolic practices existed elsewhere in the western British Isles during the Upper Palaeolithic. It cannot, however, be projected across the sea onto Castlepook several thousand years earlier. For Ireland, the absence of demonstrable ritual evidence is not evidence that people lacked belief; it is a limit on what surviving material can tell us.

A Precarious Presence

The most defensible picture is thus of an Ice Age Ireland in transition: a land of severe and shifting climates, surviving large mammals, advancing ice and altered coasts. Around the broad span represented by 31,958 BCE, the Cork cave evidence allows the possibility of brief human contact with this animal landscape. It does not yet reveal a village, a lineage or an enduring society. The key development is intellectual as much as prehistoric: renewed analysis of museum collections and caves has reopened a question once thought settled, namely whether Ireland’s human story began far earlier than the well-documented Mesolithic settlement after about 8000 BCE.

That question remains open. Later evidence is firmer: a cut-marked brown-bear patella from Alice and Gwendoline Cave in County Clare is dated to approximately 10,800–10,500 BCE, while substantial evidence for settled Mesolithic communities appears only after about 8000 BCE. Castlepook pushes inquiry much further back, to the threshold before the great ice advance. It invites further excavation and careful testing, but it also requires restraint. Ireland around 31,958 BCE is not a chapter of recorded events; it is a faint, scientifically valuable trace at the edge of recoverable human history.
