Abbey Street
This image, likely taken in late April or May 1916, shows Middle Abbey Street in central Dublin following the destruction caused during the Easter Rising. Located close to the General Post Office and Sackville Street, now O’Connell Street, the area suffered damage from artillery fire, gunfire and the fires that spread through adjoining commercial properties. Shops, offices and newspaper premises were reduced to roofless shells, shattered masonry and rubble-strewn streets.
